Jyotish Werulkar, Director of Growth – Sela, India

Please share your professional background, current role, and relevant experience.

Answer: I'm Jyotish Werulkar and I've been in tech sales for over 20 years. I started as a young sales rep, eager to learn and make a difference. I've always been fascinated by how technology can change businesses and lives, especially in India.  Today as a Director of Growth -India at Sela Cloud (Global Cloud Consulting Organization), I lead a team of talented sales people, helping them achieve their goals and build strong relationships with clients.

What led you to pursue a career in sales?

Answer: I studied tech, but I'm a people person at heart.  Campus placements led me to tech sales, and realized I was a perfect fit. I get to use my tech knowledge to help people, and the job often involves travel and meeting new folks.  It's a perfect combination of my passion, and I'm loving it.

How have you adapted to the evolving technology landscape in sales?

Answer: India's tech scene is constantly changing. Here's how I've kept up:

  • Staying Curious: I'm always trying to learn about new technologies and trends. I go to conferences meet ups and read Indian tech blogs, and connect with experts.
  • Staying Agile: I'm open to trying new sales tools and strategies, especially those that work well in India. I use technology to make my work more efficient, tailor my approach to customers, and build strong relationships.
  • Sharing What I Know: I believe in helping others, especially within the Indian tech community. I share my experience with my team, encouraging them to learn, grow, and take on new challenges.

How do you maintain work-life balance in the high-pressure environment of sales?

Answer: Sales can be demanding, especially with travel. Here's what I've learned:

  • Priorities: I focus on the most important tasks and delegate when I can. This gives me time for my family and friends. My wife has been incredibly supportive, especially during those long trips,
  • Setting Boundaries: I make sure to have a social life outside of work. It keeps me refreshed and energized.
  • Finding Balance: I enjoy exploring Indian culture and traditions. It helps me feel grounded and balanced.

What is your top advice for aspiring tech sales professionals?

Answer:

  1. Be Passionate: Your enthusiasm for technology will shine through and build trust with clients.
  2. Keep Learning: The tech world is always changing, so keep learning and stay ahead of the curve.
  3. Build Strong Relationships: Go beyond just selling a product; become a trusted advisor for your clients.
  4. Embrace Challenges: Push yourself and take on new things. It will help you grow as a professional and achieve more.

Lastly, what book would you recommend to our tech sales community and why?

Answer: For our tech sales community, I recommend "The Sales Magnet" by Kendra Lee. It's a practical and helpful guide to attracting and converting customers in the tech industry. This book will teach you about buyer psychology, building trust, and creating a brand that resonates with your audience.
